North Carolina - The first settlements

The expedition of 1587 was Sir Walter Raleigh's second attempt at establishing an English colony in the new territory of Virginia, which he had claimed for Elizabeth I. A first settlement set up on Raonoke Island in 1585 had failed because the community did not become self sufficient.

Unfortunately, the1587 expedition was also doomed. The leader, John White, returned to England for extra supplies but the war with Spain prevented him from leaving the country. When he finally got back to Raonoke in 1590, the settlers had vanished without trace. The mystery of Raleigh's Lost Colony remains unsolved.
