One of our most requested tours!
The popular Harry Potter stories about wizardry and witchcraft are the latest ingenious offerings from a land renowned for its legends, superstitions and tales of ghosts and giants. The new-found interest in all things magical is thanks to the first Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the USA), released by Warner Bros. on 16th November, 2001 and shot entirely on location in Britain.

Visiting these locations is fun for Harry Potter fans and their friends and family and have become a very popular tour option. Many of the locations used in the film can be visited while on one of our other tours (Click for locations), or all can be combined in our Overnight Harry Potter Special Tour.

Harry Potter Locations

Hogwarts School
Much of the action takes place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In reality this was mostly Gloucester Cathedral, or rather the cloisters of the cathedral: the cameras rolled only in this part of the 11th century building, its corridors representing the labyrinthine walkways of Hogwarts. Gloucester's Dean, the Very Reverend Nicholas Bury, said: "The cathedral is a particularly atmospheric place, and the cloisters must be among the most beautiful architectural gems in Europe."

Oxford University
The school scenes were filmed at much of Oxford University including Christ Church College - one of Oxford's most magnificent colleges where the University's age-old traditions still prevail. Its Bodleian Library - in real-life, the main research centre for students and scholars - doubles as Hogwarts Library. While in Oxford your guide can also show some of the other colleges that belong to the prestigious University and take a side trip to visit the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, Blenheim Palace.

Christ Church can be included in our:
Oxford - 5 hour tour
Cotswold Country - 9 hour tour

Lacock
Just a short drive from Bath is the tranquil National Trust village of Lacock, where the quiet leafy streets, lined with 16th Century cottages were used in the blockbuster film. This beautiful village will evoke memories in the minds of avid film buffs as it was also used in the period dramas Emma and Pride and Prejudice. The interior of the medieval Lacock Abbey was used as the classroom of Hogwarts school where Harry would sit with his fellow wizard apprentices.

Lacock can be included in:
Bath, Stonehenge, Salisbury - 10 hour tour
Bath - 7 hour tour

For scenes involving the Hogwarts' Quidditch match, they chose Alnwick Castle on the England/Scotland border. England's second largest inhabited castle boasted the unusual sight of around 30 children cloaked in wizard robes, learning to fly broomsticks in front of its medieval exterior.

The film-makers went to Yorkshire to find the location for Hogsmeade station. They chose the station in the moorland village of Goathland on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, one of Britain's many lovingly-preserved steam lines, which has hardly changed since opening in 1865.

There are other railway links in the movie. In London, not only platforms 4 and 5 at King's Cross station but also the Waterloo and City line (an underground railway) were employed as backdrops to Chris Columbus's film.
